An overview of the benefits

prePATINA

Comprehensive range

prePATINA offers a versatile range of products that are immediately available.

Nearly maintenance-free

prePATINA requires virtually no maintenance. Once installed, the surface delivers reliable performance over time.

Conventional processing

Genuine Titanium Zinc – can be edged, folded, soldered, and shaped as usual. No extra effort.

Weatherproof from day one

Performs reliably even under challenging construction conditions – both visually and functionally.

Anti-Finger-Print

prePATINA offers strong resistance to fingerprints and zinc hydroxide formation thanks to its anti-fingerprint technology.

Uniform color tone from day one

The typical, distinctive appearance of the natural patina.

What makes prePATINA so special!

In a single process, high-quality titanium-zinc is melted, cast, rolled and wound into a uniform coil. A special pickling process gives the surface the characteristic appearance of a natural patina, whilst ensuring that it remains solderable as usual and retains its familiar properties.

Unique and tested.

Unique Material.

prePATINA is created through a special and unique production process.

Patina with a balancing effect.

Through the natural formation of patina, minor surface changes can gradually blend in and become less noticeable over time. At the same time, the surface continues to develop its distinctive and characteristic appearance.

Product declaration available.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 are available for the prePATINA product line.

100% recyclable.

prePATINA never goes to waste. The material can be 100% recycled, melted down, and reused without loss of quality.

Test station on Helgoland

For over 10 years, we have been using the offshore climate on Heligoland to test our surfaces under extreme weather conditions. We document the behaviour of the surfaces at regular intervals. The test results are analysed in the Research & Development department at RHEINZINK. In this way, we constantly check how our surfaces react to challenging site-specific climatic conditions, even in the long term, and derive possible optimisations from this.

FAQs about prePATINA

1. What is prePATINA?

It is a high-quality titanium zinc material that undergoes a special pre-weathering process at the factory. The result is a uniform, matte patina – without artificial coating or paint. Even though it is completely new, it looks matured and ready for immediate use . It has a refined appearance and is highly resistant to environmental influences – making it durable, low-maintenance, and reliable for roofs, façades, and detailed applications.

2. What is prePATINA especially suited for?

Extremely versatile, adaptable to modern and traditional designs, easy to shape, cut, fold, and solder.
Ideal for:

  • Roofs: standing seam, shingles, sheets – even for complex shapes and dormers
  • Façades: installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally for a uniform look
  • Roof drainage: gutters, downpipes, box gutters – all in a matching system color
  • Details & transitions: copings, verge flashings, dormer cladding, wall copings or chimney cladding

3. How does the surface change over time?

The surface evolves positively: it develops further while keeping its base tone. Small scratches or marks disappear naturally over weeks or months. Unlike painted materials, where scratches remain visible, prePATINA  is self-healing.

The surface becomes slightly nuanced over time but maintains its uniform character – no blotches or streaks. The result: a long-lasting, premium appearance with minimal effort.

4. Does the material require maintenance?

No. One of the biggest advantages: prePATINA is low-maintenance.

The patina acts as a natural protective layer. Even in hard-to-reach areas like high façades or dormers, it remains beautiful for years with no cleaning or care needed – saving time and reducing maintenance costs.

5. How does it differ from regular zinc?

It’s pre-weathered at the factory. Three major advantages:

  1. Time-saving on-site: no waiting for natural weathering – uniform surface from day one.
  2. Visual consistency: no uneven patina during weathering.
  3. Same material properties: despite the patina, it remains fully solderable and workable – like classic titanium zinc.

6. How long does prePATINA last?

Properly installed, it lasts more than 50 years – proven in long-term tests and real-world use. The patina offers long-lasting corrosion protection even in harsh environments like coastal or industrial areas.

A material you can trust – even decades later.

8. Is the surface solderable?

Yes, fully solderable. The pre-weathering is not a coating and does not affect bonding.

Simply remove the light protective layer before soft soldering. The material can be folded, riveted, welded, and clamped as usual. No processing limitations – full design freedom.

9. In which surface finishes is prePATINA available?

RHEINZINK-prePATINA is available in blue-grey and graphite-grey finishes. The pre-weathered finishes give the material a uniform, high-quality appearance right from the start and, depending on the design requirements, offer a light or slightly darker look.
