60 years of RHEINZINK. One material. Countless possibilities.

A success story with a bright future

For 60 years, RHEINZINK has been synonymous with expertise in titanium-zinc roofing, cladding and drainage solutions.

What began in 1966 with the aim of establishing a high-quality material for roof drainage as well as roof and façade applications has developed into an internationally active company. Working alongside architects, planners and tradespeople, RHEINZINK has been supporting the realisation of construction projects for six decades. The solutions employed combine design quality with the material’s long service life.

RHEINZINK’s milestones

From a vision to becoming the market leader in titanium zinc

the 1960s

A vision takes shape

The industrial visionary Herbert Grillo realised that the bundle rolling process, which was standard at the time, no longer met the increasing quality requirements for architectural zinc. He set about finding a more modern production technology.

8 February 1966

Foundation of RHEINZINK

Whilst on a trip to the USA, Herbert Grillo discovers modern technology for smelting, casting and rolling zinc. RHEINZINK is founded in partnership with Grillo-Werke, Stolberger Zink AG and Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke.

24 July 1967

Start of the construction project

RHEINZINK celebrated the completion of its first large factory building in Datteln, measuring 255 metres in length and 27.5 metres in width. This laid the foundations for the subsequent industrial production of titanium zinc. At the same time, construction began on the administration building, thereby establishing the company’s organisational and production infrastructure.

1968 - 1969

Start of production in Datteln

In 1968, the rolling mill and the first shearing line were installed.

Just one year later, the semi-finished products plant came into operation (2nd picture). At the Datteln site, the new continuous wide-strip casting and rolling line began operations. RHEINZINK thus became a European pioneer in the manufacture of high-quality titanium-zinc products. Annual production capacity stands at 25,000 tonnes. It is Europe’s only horizontal wide-strip casting machine, purchased in the USA.
RHEINZINK employs 150 people.

1 April 1971

Start der Fertigmaterial-Produktion

The processing hall in Datteln is commissioned. In addition, production staff and machinery from the Dortmund site are relocated to Datteln. Traditional craft-based manufacturing processes are gradually being replaced by industrial processes.

1974 - 1982

Building a strong brand

1 July 1974 – Commissioning of the continuous casting and rolling line. Two sling towers are installed in the rolling process upstream of the rolling mill; installation of the “automatic coil change system”.

1 November 1976 – Commissioning of soldering machine No. 1.
Further soldering machines, roll formers and finishing halls follow.

In 1978, the decision is taken
to focus exclusively on architectural zinc.
Industrial production of finished products begins and the development of a strong brand gets under way. Specialist retailers and craft businesses become key partners and help to raise the profile of RHEINZINK throughout Germany.

1 April 1988

Pre-weathering – Innovation with character

Employees develop the patented RHEINZINK pre-weathering process. This pre-weathering technology fulfils the desire of many architects for a high-quality surface that already has an aged appearance. The characteristic blue-grey appearance becomes the hallmark of numerous buildings worldwide.

the 1990s

Expansion of production capacity

RHEINZINK is continually expanding its international presence. New sales structures and branches are strengthening its ties with customers and partners. The company is evolving from a German manufacturer into a global provider of solutions for sophisticated architecture.

Two new melting furnaces and a new longitudinal forming line commenced operations in 1992. Also commissioned were the second 4-stage deep-drawing press, the second stage press, the 7th and 8th pipe-bend soldering machines, the third pipe soldering line and the expansion of the BuC line to two presses.

1999 - 2005

Integration into the Grillo Group

By the end of the 1990s, Grillo held a majority stake in RHEINZINK. The company acquired two-thirds of the shares. This permanently cemented the close ties with the family business and laid the foundations for its future development.

1 December 2005 – RHEINZINK became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grillo Werke Duisburg AG.

2006

Anniversary investment

The highlight of this anniversary year is the new Pre-weathering Plant 2, the largest single investment in RHEINZINK’s history. Two belt storage units, each approximately 30 metres high, enable continuous operation. This forward-looking investment strengthens the company’s international competitiveness and sets a benchmark for innovation and growth.

29 September 2009

Inauguration of the Libeskind Villa

After six months of construction, the villa designed by
star architect Daniel Libeskind is being inaugurated. It serves as a reception building.

In 2019, the Libeskind Villa provided an exclusive setting for the ‘Meine Welt’ vernissage, showcasing the works of Armin Müller-Stahl.

2017

A new approach to surfaces

For the CLASSIC, artCOLOR and prePATINA product ranges, there will be changes to the surface designations and an expansion of the colour combinations.

2020

Product launch and launch of Interactive

With PRISMO, RHEINZINK is expanding its portfolio to include a design-oriented product range featuring six distinctive surface finishes: red, green, brown, blue, gold and black.

In the same year, the digital training platform RHEINZINK-INTERACTIVE is launched.

2024-2025

Surface launches

The new PRISMO brushed white+ finish captivates with its elegant whitish finish – developed and manufactured in-house in Datteln.
Also manufactured in Datteln and recently launched – GRANUM EXTRA. A finish with a sophisticated, matt appearance, featuring an innovative coating.

2026
