The building at Goethegasse 1 is one of the most exclusive addresses in the Austrian capital. Located directly across from the Opera House, the Hofburg, the Albertina, and the Burggarten - and thus in the heart of Vienna’s historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - this building, constructed in 1862, has long set architectural standards. This made the requirements for the roof extension all the more demanding; the Viennese architectural office silberpfeil architekten interpreted it as a “dialogue with the historic surroundings” and realized it in a manner that is both ultra-modern and forward-looking.

The construction of the roof surfaces presented very specific challenges: The architects required a horizontal structure, which, in the case of barrel roofs with no significant slope, can usually only be achieved using a double-standing seam roof covering.

The decision to use the oversized RHEINZINK large flatlock tiles not only opened up entirely new possibilities for the architects but also for the contractors. The individual 6-meter-long tiles are equipped with end plates at the ends and recessed gutters at the longitudinal joints, ensuring reliable drainage of the individual water levels from the ridge to the eaves. In addition to offering maximum structural safety and flexibility, the large RHEINZINK-Flatlock Tile also impresses visually. Through the natural patination process, the uniformly colored tiles of the pre-weathered base material become a distinctive design element that lends a powerful character to the building’s modern, delicate-looking exterior.
